12th Spanish Cinema Week
24-30 March 2012
During the last week of March, Kino Pod Baranami will see a complete change of climate – the 12th Week of Spanish Cinema will transport us to the Iberian Peninsula. It’s the only chance to see the best – and sadly rarely shown – Spanish films of recent years. The presented feature films, documentaries and short films reflect the originality and variety of genre and topics of one of Europe’s most fascinating cinemas.
We’ll see the drama Don’t Be Afraid (No tengas miedo) directed by Montxo Armendáriz, nominated for an Oscar for his Secrets of the Heart. The moving story of the 25-year-old Silvia, who decides to change her life and move on from disturbing childhood memories, features stars of Spanish cinema: Belén Rueda, famous for her role in The Orphanage, and Lluís Homar (Broken Embraces). A screening of Spain’s candidate for this year’s Oscars – Black Bread (Pan negro) by Agustí Villaronga will be a certain hit. The film tore its way onto Spanish screens, winning nine Goya awards – including the most prized for best film. It’s a story of Andreu, a teenager who starts his own investigation to save his father from execution after he has been wrongly accused of murder. The programme also includes Morente – an extraordinary documentary about Enrique Morente, one of the most important and influential, albeit controversial, singers who revolutionised and revived contemporary flamenco. Based on pieces he performed to texts by Pablo Picasso, the film by Emilio Ruiz Barrachina unexpectedly became the final record and artistic testament of the singer, who passed away in 2010.
