8th International Percussion Festival Sources and Inspirations

9-11 February 2012

Rhythms of Silence

Can lands bound with permafrost teem with life? We’ll be searching for answers between 9-11 February during the 8th International Percussion Festival Sources and Inspirations. The leading motif of this year’s event will be Scandinavia – Music of Silence.

Mysterious, cool, dark, inaccessible – that’s how we tend to perceive the northern reaches of Europe. Composers from those regions have long been surprising us with their individuality and originality. Some appreciate Scandinavian music for its colourful subtlety, others for emotional restraint, others still sense the space between sounds. The main stream of the festival will feature SOT – an original Norwegian group inspired by folk music from the farthest corners of Scandinavia. The group is led by Lars Andreas Haug, regarded as one of the world’s best tuba players. We hardly ever encounter this sort of music in our concert halls – likely to send you into a trance. More lyrical and melancholic sounds will flow from the Pentti Lahti / László Süle / Panu Savolainen Group. Lahti is a renowned Finnish saxophonist, regarded as Jan Garbarek’s artistic guru. He is perfectly complemented by Süle – a Hungarian pianist living and performing in Finland for many years. Our own home-grown Levity will also produce a special “Scandinavian” project. They once debuted at just this festival; today they are regarded as one of the most interesting jazz bands. In 2010, to the amazement of their listeners, they abandoned their usual acoustic sound to record the double album Chopin Shuffle. The excellent reinterpretations of the Polish composer’s works were equally well received by the audiences and the critics.

What else? Mannheimer Schlagwerk and Dennis Kuhn will provide a virtuoso performance during a joint concert with the Cracovian Amadrums, featuring chamber percussion music. Traditionally, there will also be workshops and club concerts, Big Band of the Academy of Music in Kraków, and outstanding jazz musicians from Poland.

The originator and artistic director of the festival is Jan Pilch, professor and lecturer at the Academy of Music in Kraków (since 1982 he has educated almost 30 graduates, the majority of whom are active on the jazz and classical stages). As a percussionist himself, Pilch has worked with artists including Marek Grechuta, Grzegorz Turnau, Stanisław Sojka, Antonina Krzysztoń, and Anna Treter. It’s well worth testing your ability under the watchful eye of such an accomplished master. (Artur Jackowski, "Karnet" monthly)
