Sacrum Profanum Festival
9-17 September 2012
Sacrum Profanum is a festival that presents the music of the 20th century, but has already earned the status of one of the most interesting musical events in Europe. Its rank is structured upon the participation of the most highly praised ensembles performing contemporary music, including Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Klangforum Wien, Theatre of Voices, Asko|Schönberg, London Sinfonietta, and musikFabrik. The Sacrum Profanum connects classical with other styles and types of music, hence the presence of Polish leading jazz artists (Tomasz Stańko, Leszek Możdżer), and stars whose number includes Aphex Twin and Kraftwerk. To introduce order among the numerous trends and the richness of sounds of 20th-century music, the festival follows a thematic focus: every year, the programme concentrates on works by composers from another country. Places of various character are adapted to the needs of the Sacrum Profanum concert; they range from Krakow Philharmonic Hall, via the Oskar Schindler Factory and Museum of Municipal Engineering, to production halls in the ArcelorMittal Steelworks. The festival has won Poland's top awards and honours..
