Modernism in Nowa Huta. A New Space

The political breakthrough in 1956 in Poland didn’t remain without influence on the appearance of the standard-bearing Socialist city near Kraków. The Gomułka Era (between 1956-1970) – conventionally called the 60s – in Nowa Huta’s architecture and design is recalled by an exhibition hosted by the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków.

For the Canary series, Japanese photographer asked the residents of Brisbane, Australia, and Sendai, Japan, to choose the “lightest” and “darkest” places in each city; based on that information she attempted to find links between the place and the person who chose it. Just before the Euro 2012 football championships kick off in June, it’s worth recalling the role played by football in post-war Poland. Was it simply one more sports discipline, or was it a game which – by making up for the chronic food shortages – allowed Poles to escape their grim realities, however briefly?
