Cracovian nativity scenes
Since 1945, the first Thursday in December (this year 1 December) has been a celebration of Kraków’s nativity scenes. Their makers gather at the Adam Mickiewicz monument and at high noon they walk round the Sukiennice to the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków, the organiser of the annual Kraków Nativity Scene Competition. Every year, nativity scenes made by children and young people appear side by side with those crafted by old masters and competition winners. Three days later, on Sunday 4 December, the museum director hosts a ceremony announcing the winners and opens a post-competition exhibition at the Krzysztofory Palace, featuring beautiful and colourful constructions several feet high, as well as miniature masterpieces.
