After the opening night of the show (1851), Giuseppe Verdi is said to have stated that he would never write anything better. Rigoletto is a classic opera piece which recounts the story of an internal struggle of a servant. Every day, he witnesses his Master's ignoble behaviour, which he watches with amusement, until his own daugher comes into play. From then on, the character is torn apart by conflicting emotions: his loyalty towards the ruler and love of his daughter. It is only natural that a desire to take revenge should surge in the servant, which adds to the complication of his daughter's budding feeling towards the frivolous ruler. Henryk Baranowski, the director of the show realized for the 50th anniversary of the Krakow Philharmonic, was awarded a Golden Mask (2000) for his interpretation.
