Not a Wind-Up
Hidden in the back rows of symphonic orchestras, masked with the sound of violins playing an orchestral tutti (well, maybe not the trumpets so much :-)), they’ve been regarded as outsiders in both solo and chamber repertoires for centuries. Although they have a long history, it wasn’t until Romantic and Impressionist composers finally appreciated their potential. Wind instruments have never had it easy…
Still, they will form the centrepiece of the 7th edition of the La Musica da Camera cycle, dreamt up by Robert Kabara, director and artistic leader of the Sinfonietta Cracovia orchestra. Inaugurating the cycle in 2009, the originator promised that as well as chamber masterpieces and unforgettable performances, we’ll also be introduced to “secrets of instruments not loved as much as they should be”.
And the promise will come true on 6 March: the Collegium Novum of the Jagiellonian University will resound with the wind quintet Gruppo di Tempera, formed by Warsaw instrumentalists frequently working with the Cracovian ensemble: Agata Igras-Sawicka (flute), Sebastian Aleksandrowicz (oboe), Adrian Janda (clarinet), Artur Kasperek (bassoon), and Tomasz Bińkowski (French horn). They will be accompanied by the pianist Agnieszka Kopacka-Aleksandrowicz. The artists will present pieces by Jacques Ibert, Anatoly Liadov, Francis Poulenc and Wojciech Kilar, which will combine the abilities of this extraordinary array of performers with the sheer beauty of the sound of wind instruments.
